Nobel Peace Prize Recipient Condemns US Sanctions on ICC Judges

11 October, 2026 17:17

South African jurist Navi Pillay, this year’s Nobel Peace Prize recipient, has strongly criticised Washington’s latest sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC), describing them as “unheard of” and “unacceptable.” Speaking via video link from Nuremberg at an event organised by the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo on Saturday, Pillay expressed concern over the future of international courts, particularly the ICC, which is based in The Hague.

Pillay, 85, said the sanctions had intensified tensions and anxiety surrounding the continued functioning of international judicial institutions. She warned that hundreds of ICC employees felt threatened, raising concerns about the safety and security of court personnel amid growing pressure on the tribunal.

She also questioned the decision to sanction judges for carrying out their judicial responsibilities, arguing that penalising judicial officials for issuing court orders was unacceptable. Pillay’s remarks highlighted wider concerns about the independence of international justice institutions and their ability to perform their duties without political pressure.
