Araghchi Calls for International Accountability for Environmental Destruction During Wars

Araghchi described the environment as the common heritage of humanity, warning against its use as a tool of political pressure or a casualty of military and economic interests. He said the destruction of water resources, agricultural land, forests and energy infrastructure during armed conflicts could have consequences extending long after hostilities end. The Iranian foreign minister stressed the need for stronger international mechanisms to document environmental damage, prevent further destruction and ensure that those responsible face appropriate legal consequences.
Citing Gaza, Lebanon and Iran, Araghchi highlighted the environmental impact of military operations across the region. Regarding Gaza, he pointed to the destruction of water supply and sewage networks, contamination of soil and water, coastal pollution, accumulated rubble and widespread damage to olive groves. He also referred to assessments by the United Nations Environment Program describing the scale of environmental damage in Gaza as unprecedented. His remarks renewed calls for international cooperation to protect ecosystems during conflicts and establish clearer legal responsibility for long-term environmental harm.
