Trump Suggests Renaming Pacific or Atlantic Ocean After Himself

US President Donald Trump has suggested renaming either the Pacific Ocean or the Atlantic Ocean after himself, joking that the United States should have an ocean and a major river bearing names associated with him before he leaves office.
Speaking at a rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, Trump floated the idea of calling one of the world’s largest oceans the “Trump Ocean” or the “Ocean of the Americas,” drawing laughter and applause from the audience, according to a US newspaper report.
“We have a gulf now, we have a beautiful lake. Now somebody said you need a river. We need a river, we need an ocean, too,” Trump told the gathering. He suggested that either the Atlantic or Pacific could receive a new name, presenting the idea in a humorous tone rather than announcing a formal government initiative.
The remarks follow previous efforts by the Trump administration to change the names of prominent geographical features associated with the United States. Last year, Trump moved to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America, a decision that triggered diplomatic friction with Mexico and a dispute over naming conventions in international media coverage.
The Associated Press, one of the world’s major news agencies, declined to adopt the new name universally, prompting a separate controversy over how the geographical feature should be identified in its reporting.
Trump also introduced the name “Lake America” for Lake Ontario in August during an ongoing dispute with Canada over trade and tariffs, according to the supplied report. Lake Ontario lies along the US-Canadian border and is one of the five Great Lakes shared by the two countries.
The latest suggestion raises questions about the distinction between a president’s preferred terminology and internationally recognised geographical names. Renaming an ocean would be substantially more complicated than changing terminology used in US federal government records, given the international systems, maps and reference materials that identify the world’s oceans.
The Pacific and Atlantic oceans extend across multiple countries and jurisdictions, making any widely recognised change dependent on acceptance beyond the United States. A presidential statement alone would not automatically establish a new internationally accepted name.
Trump’s comments did not include a formal proposal, a timetable or details of any administrative process to rename either ocean. It therefore remains unclear whether the remarks will lead to any official action or remain part of his public rhetoric.
