Section 144 Imposed in Peshawar for One Week Amid Security Concerns

12 October, 2026 18:12

Authorities have imposed Section 144 in Peshawar for one week, according to an official notification. Under the restrictions, protests, rallies and public gatherings, including assembly-related meetings, will not be permitted. The notification further states that gatherings of five or more people at a single location will be prohibited and that strict legal action will be taken against violators.

Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry has said the opposition can challenge the imposition of an emergency or governor’s rule in court. Speaking to the media in Islamabad, he said Parliament would ratify the emergency and urged the opposition to invite the government to its proposed all-parties conference (APC). He added that the government was prepared to present comprehensive data on terrorism and the martyrs of the conflict before opposition parties.

Chaudhry alleged that the emergency had become necessary because of what he described as the PTI’s stubbornness and lack of cooperation. He said the federal government had sought political support for counterterrorism efforts but accused the opposition of prioritizing political activities instead. He maintained that the government had faced obstacles in its efforts to combat terrorism and said the lack of cooperation had contributed to the decision to take the measure.
