Ron Howard Reveals Idea for ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ Sequel

Actor Ron Howard has publicized the hint about a sequel to How the Grinch Stole Christmas, but the director is keeping the details under wraps. Howard shared the chance of return back the popular Christmas film while promoting his upcoming documentary Avedon, which is set to arrive on Netflix this autumn.

At a festival the actor said the idea came to him about a year ago. He became enthusiastic about the conception and started thinking about how it could cultivate into a sequel.

Howard also exposed that Jim Carrey is supportive of the idea. However, the actor considers the project should move forward only if the team is confident it can deliver something truly special.

The director acknowledged that making the original film was a difficult experience. He described the production as a major struggle, particularly because of the extensive makeup Carrey had to wear to portray the Grinch.

Howard noted that motion-capture technology could offer an alternative for a potential sequel. Carrey previously worked on a motion-capture film directed by Robert Zemeckis, playing Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. This experience could provide a different approach to bringing the character back to the screen.

Howard also mentioned that writers Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel, who contributed significantly to the original film, are returning for the sequel.

Recalling the challenges of the first movie, Howard said the production hired Richard Marcinko, who had trained military personnel to withstand imprisonment and torture, to help Carrey cope with the demanding makeup process.

Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment have reportedly been developing the sequel since June. Howard is expected to direct the project, with Brian Grazer serving as producer. Carrey has also been reported to be in talks to reprise his role, although further details about the story and production remain undisclosed.
