Arjun Bijlani and Neha Swami Apologise Over Controversial T-Shirt

Indian actor Arjun Bijlani and his wife Neha Swami Bijlani have issued an official statement after severe backlash over a T-shirt Neha wore at a latest event.

The T-shirt highlighted a big caricature of Mickey Mouse along with a circle that conceded the names of Allah and Prophet Muhammad, which generated an extensive backlash across social media.

In their statement, the couple said Neha had no idea what the writing meant when she wore it.

“Neha was completely unaware of the meaning and significance of the writing on the T-shirt when she wore it,” the statement read. They added they had “no intention to hurt, disrespect or offend the religious sentiments of any individual or community,” and said they respect all faiths and would never knowingly hurt anyone’s sentiments.

They also explained where the T-shirt came from. They didn’t buy it themselves. A fan in Bangkok gifted it to them.

They said they celebrate all festivals and apologised for what happened. “We are sorry for what happened unintentionally and we will always be careful in future with regards to the gifts received.”

The couple also hit out at the online abuse. “While we understand that people may have strong feelings about matters of religious significance, the trolling, abusive language, curses and threats directed at Neha are deeply distressing and unacceptable. A situation arising from a lack of awareness should not become a reason to subject an individual to online harassment or threats.”

The statement ended with an appeal to the public to approach the matter with understanding and compassion.

“We hope this clarification helps put the matter into perspective and request everyone to allow the situation to be addressed with dignity and understanding.” Arjun also urged people to stop targeting Neha and her family.
