US Involved in 23 Regime Change Attempts in the Middle East: Special Envoy

21 October, 2026 09:31

US diplomat Tom Barrack has said that the United States is not withdrawing from the Middle East but is reviewing its traditional policy of providing security in exchange for oil and influencing governments in the region.

According to Al Jazeera, Barrack, the US ambassador to Türkiye and special envoy for Syria, made these remarks while addressing the Global Security Forum in Doha, Qatar.

He said the United States was reassessing its responsibilities and role in the region instead of trying to maintain control over it.

Barrack added that Middle Eastern countries were also beginning to understand that they could not depend on the United States to solve all their problems.

He revealed that the US had been involved in 23 attempts to change governments in several Middle Eastern countries. He said these interventions and efforts to change rulers had often proved unsuccessful.

US President Donald Trump had previously described attacks on Iran as an effort to bring about regime change in the country. However, that claim did not prove successful.
