Netanyahu Renews Threats Against Iran, Signals Israel Could Act Without Trump’s Approval

23 October, 2026 08:28

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has renewed his threats against Iran, indicating that Israel could launch military action without waiting for US President Donald Trump’s approval, raising fresh concerns about the possibility of another escalation in the region.

Addressing a graduation ceremony for Israeli military officers, Netanyahu accused Iran’s leadership of seeking to rebuild its nuclear capabilities. He referred to Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and alleged that Tehran was moving towards developing nuclear weapons. However, the statements reflect Israel’s position and do not, by themselves, establish the current status of Iran’s nuclear programme.

Netanyahu’s remarks also highlighted Israel’s willingness to retain the option of unilateral military action, even if Washington has reservations about the timing or consequences of another confrontation. Such a move could further complicate diplomatic efforts and increase the risk of a wider regional conflict.

In an even more far-reaching statement, Netanyahu presented a change of government in Iran as a potential solution to what Israel describes as a security threat. He indicated that the Israeli military and intelligence services had received instructions related to this objective, extending the scope of his stated ambitions beyond targeting specific nuclear or military facilities.

The remarks raise questions about the limits of Israel’s military objectives and the consequences of pursuing political change through military pressure. Any attempt to expand military operations beyond specific security targets could deepen instability and make a negotiated settlement more difficult.

Netanyahu also referred to Trump’s willingness to assist Israel in completing what he described as remaining tasks. At the same time, his suggestion that Israel could act without American approval highlights the possibility of differences between the two allies over the timing and scale of military action.

Reports have also discussed preparations for possible renewed strikes against Iranian infrastructure, nuclear facilities, missile installations and drone stockpiles. However, the available information does not establish that a new operation has been authorised or that an attack is imminent.

Netanyahu separately rejected reports that Trump had prevented Israel from attacking Iran in early October. His denial adds to the uncertainty surrounding the extent of American influence over Israeli military planning and the degree of coordination between the two governments.

The central issue is whether Israel’s stated security concerns will lead to further military action or whether diplomatic efforts can prevent another confrontation. Netanyahu’s latest remarks have put the possibility of unilateral strikes and the declared objective of political change in Iran back at the centre of the regional debate.

With the consequences of another conflict potentially extending beyond Israel and Iran, any renewed military campaign could place additional pressure on regional security and international diplomatic efforts.
