ISLAMABAD: Another PTI lawmaker Junaid Akbar has resigned from the party’s core committee, citing frustration over his lack of influence and inability to meet the incarcerated party founder, Imran Khan.

Akbar’s resignation follows that of Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub, who stepped down as PTI secretary general.

The resignations have exposed deep-seated divisions within the party, with some members accusing certain leaders of prioritising their personal interests over the party’s well-being.Sher Afzal Marwat also demanded the resignation of PTI Senator Shibli Faraz, alleging that he was preventing access to jailed Imran Khan.

In his resignation letter, Akbar expressed frustration over the lack of transparency and accountability within the party, stating that “their interests lie with each other, and we are told the party policy aligns with Imran Khan’s views”

Despite his resignation, Akbar reaffirmed his loyalty to the PTI, stating that “PTI is my home, and I am not part of any group nor will I be”.

However, the party’s unity is being tested, with reports suggesting that 27 PTI-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) lawmakers are considering resigning from the National Assembly in protest against the party’s top leadership.

Insiders revealed that 21 lawmakers are hinting at forming a forward bloc due to the leadership’s failure to secure the release of Imran Khan from jail.

The disgruntled MNAs complained that some leaders were eyeing higher posts instead of focusing on securing the release of the PTI founder and other jailed party leaders.

The crisis has also triggered discussions on appointing a new secretary general, potentially from Punjab, with Sheikh Waqas Akram from Jhang being a strong candidate.

However, PTI’s parliamentary party has expressed confidence in Omar Ayub, urging that his resignation not be accepted, and denying reports of a ‘forward bloc’.
