Punjab Makes EV Charging Stations Mandatory for Petrol Pumps

The Punjab government has announced a major step toward clean transportation by making EV charging stations compulsory for all new petrol pumps in the province. The decision was shared on Friday after Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz posted the new instruction on her official Facebook page.

She wrote, “EV Charging Stations Made Mandatory at All New Petrol Pumps Across Punjab,” confirming the government’s commitment to promoting electric mobility.

Push Toward Green Transportation

The new rule is part of Punjab’s broader plan to encourage the use of electric vehicles. Officials say the move will help reduce air pollution, improve environmental health, and provide EV owners with easier access to charging facilities.
The government believes that when charging stations are available at petrol pumps, more people will feel comfortable buying electric vehicles.

Part of Pakistan’s New Energy Vehicle Policy

Pakistan introduced its New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Policy in August 2025. The policy aims to increase the share of new energy vehicles to 30% of new sales by 2030, 50% by 2040, and reach a net-zero transport fleet by 2060.

The initiative is being carried out jointly by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination (MoCC&EC), the Ministry of Industries and Production, and several other stakeholders.

Officials Highlight Benefits of EV Adoption

Earlier this year, government spokesperson Muhammad Saleem Shaikh said that Pakistan’s transport sector is a major contributor to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. He stressed that shifting to electric vehicles is essential for a healthier and more stable future.

MoCC&EC Director General Mohammad Asif Sahibzada also said that electric vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions. He added that this transition will help reduce smog in major cities and lower the number of respiratory and heart-related diseases, especially in children and elderly citizens.

The new rule for charging stations at petrol pumps is expected to give a strong boost to Pakistan’s electric vehicle ecosystem by improving accessibility, convenience, and public trust.
