Beware! your WhatsApp account can be hacked

11 June, 2024 13:45

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has warned the public that there has been an increase in the number of cases of hacking WhatsApp accounts of citizens in recent days.

According to FIA, cyber criminals are specifically targeting women’s WhatsApp accounts these days as they gain access to their social media accounts and later access their personal information including chats, photos and exploit them through videos.

How can cyber criminals access your WhatsApp account?

Cyber criminals are using advanced methods, including phishing and social engineering, to gain unauthorized access to WhatsApp accounts.

Phishing tactics often consist of deceptive messages that trick users into revealing personal information or clicking on malicious links, in attacks that primarily target female users.

Cyber criminals can then use these hacked accounts to publish inappropriate content and commit fraud, according to the FIA.

Safety measures

According to the investigation agency, you can keep your account safe by taking these security measures.

FIA advises citizens to enable two-step verification in WhatsApp settings. The two-step verification provides an additional layer of security that can help protect your account from unauthorized access.  Avoid opening messages, images, videos or files sent by unrelated/stranger numbers, these messages can often contain spam links or files that can damage your mobile phone or your account.

Regularly review and update your WhatsApp privacy settings to restrict access to your personal information. If your WhatsApp account is hacked, immediately contact FIA’s helpline 1991 or visit the nearest FIA circle.

Besides, contact WhatsApp Help to regain control of your account and implement appropriate security measures.
