John Stockton, born March 26, 1962, in Spokane, Washington, is widely regarded as one of the greatest point guards in basketball history.

Throughout his 19-year career with the Utah Jazz, Stockton set NBA records for most career assists (15,806) and steals (3,265), achievements that have solidified his legacy in the sport.

Stockton’s basketball journey began at Gonzaga University in his hometown of Spokane, where he became the school’s all-time leader in both assists and steals.

Selected by the Utah Jazz in the first round of the 1984 NBA Draft, Stockton quickly made an impact. By his fourth season, he had earned the role of the team’s starting point guard, leading the league in assists in his first year running the Jazz offense.

That achievement marked the beginning of an impressive streak, as Stockton led the NBA in assists for nine consecutive seasons, setting a single-season record of 1,164 assists in 1990-91.

One of the hallmarks of Stockton’s career was his dynamic partnership with power forward Karl Malone. The two formed one of the most effective pick-and-roll duos in NBA history.

Despite standing at only 6 feet 1 inch (1.85 meters), Stockton’s relentless energy and tenacious play more than compensated for his lack of height. His defense was also a key part of his game, as he led the league in steals twice, in 1988-89 and 1991-92.

Stockton’s consistency in reaching the playoffs was unmatched, as he never missed the postseason during his nearly two-decade tenure with the Jazz.

However, despite leading the team to five conference finals appearances and two NBA Finals appearances (1997 and 1998), Stockton retired in 2003 without ever capturing an NBA championship.

On the international stage, Stockton was a key contributor to the U.S. men’s national basketball team, winning Olympic gold medals in 1992 and 1996.

Throughout his career, he earned 10 All-Star Game selections and was named to the All-NBA First Team twice (1993-94 and 1994-95). In 1996, he was honored as one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history, and in 2009, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

In addition to his playing career, Stockton also authored his autobiography, Assisted, which was published in 2013, giving fans a deeper look into his journey both on and off the court.
