Who is likely to be the next Pope?
Pope Francis remains in a critical condition, as his blood reports indicate early kidney failure, according to an AP report. The 88-year-old Pontiff is currently responsive but is battling pneumonia and a serious lung infection.
Over the weekend, many of his scheduled events were cancelled, raising concerns about the upcoming Holy Year. With uncertainty surrounding his health, speculation is growing about who might lead the Vatican in the future.
How is a New Pope Selected?
If Pope Francis passes away or resigns due to health reasons, the Vatican will hold a papal conclave to elect a new Pope. This process involves the College of Cardinals, who gather in the Sistine Chapel to conduct a secret ballot.
As of January 25, 2025, there are 138 electors among the 252 cardinals, but only those under the age of 80 are eligible to vote. According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, four rounds of voting are conducted daily until a candidate secures a two-thirds majority. The election process typically lasts 15-20 days.
