The Liberal Party of Canada has officially disqualified former Member of Parliament (MP) Ruby Dhalla from the race to become the next leader.
The party’s leadership vote committee unanimously voted on Friday after determining that Dhalla had committed 10 violations, including issues related to leadership and expense regulations.
In an official statement, Azam Ishmael, the national director of the party, revealed that Dhalla’s violations were extremely serious. The party expressed concerns that she may have violated the Canada Elections Act, failed to disclose material facts, and inaccurately reported finances.
Furthermore, Dhalla allegedly did not report the involvement of a non-Canadian citizen in her campaign, raising concerns over potential foreign interference.
Dhalla, who was informed of her disqualification while live on television during an interview, was visibly shocked by the news. In the interview, she dismissed the accusations as “fabricated” and claimed the actions were part of a larger scheme to pave the way for front-runner Mark Carney’s leadership. She vowed to appeal the decision, stating, “I’m not giving up.”
The disqualification followed an investigation into alleged donation irregularities. The Liberal Party had previously withheld $21,000 in donations from Dhalla’s campaign, suspecting that some donors had exceeded the legal contribution limit. The issue arose after Elections Canada released donation data that raised questions regarding the donation sources.
Despite these controversies, Dhalla remained a vocal contender, promoting policies that challenged the current Liberal Party agenda.
She was the only candidate to propose significant departures from mainstream Liberal policy, including deporting illegal immigrants and introducing life sentences for hard drug possession. However, political observers believe that Dhalla’s disqualification will not significantly alter the dynamics of the leadership race, which is set to conclude on March 9.
The remaining candidates in the race include former MPs Frank Baylis, Mark Carney, Chrystia Freeland, and Karina Gould.
