Ghana has a new Inspector-General of Police (IGP), as Christian Tetteh Yohunu officially took over the position on March 13, 2025, succeeding his predecessor, Dampare. With a distinguished law enforcement career spanning over 40 years, Yohunu brings extensive experience and leadership to the Ghana Police Service.

Early Life & Education

Born on December 27, 1966, Christian Tetteh Yohunu completed his early education at Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School before advancing to the University of Ghana, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree.

To further refine his leadership skills, he pursued an Executive MBA in Project Management at the Institute of Professional Studies (now UPSA). His strong educational background has played a crucial role in his strategic approach to law enforcement.

Career Achievements

Throughout his career, Yohunu has held several key leadership roles, including:

  • Divisional Commander for Accra Central
  • Accra Regional Operations Commander (2007–2009)
  • Director-General of the Motor Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD) (2015)

His commitment to fighting crime earned him the Grand Medal Award in 2011, one of Ghana’s highest civilian honors. Yohunu was also part of two United Nations peacekeeping missions in Bosnia and Herzegovina and East Timor, contributing to global security efforts.

In terms of career progression, he was promoted to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) in 2012 and later elevated to Commissioner of Police (COP) in 2016, where he played a vital role in police administration and special duties.
