Who is Stacey Abrams? Biography & Net Worth
Stacey Yvonne Abrams was born on December 9, 1973, in Madison, Wisconsin, but spent much of her childhood in Gulfport, Mississippi, before her family settled in Atlanta, Georgia.
The second oldest of six siblings, Abrams grew up in a household that emphasized education, faith, and public service. Her parents, both United Methodist ministers, instilled in her a strong sense of social responsibility.
A gifted student, Abrams graduated as valedictorian of her high school before attending Spelman College, a historically Black institution in Atlanta. There, she studied political science, economics, and sociology while engaging in activism. In 1992, she co-founded Students for African American Empowerment and led a protest against Georgia’s state flag, which then featured a Confederate emblem. Her bold activism caught the attention of Atlanta’s political leaders, and she later worked for Mayor Maynard Jackson’s Office of Youth Services.
After earning her bachelor’s degree in 1995, Abrams pursued a master’s in public policy from the University of Texas at Austin and later a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Yale Law School in 1999.
Political Career and Historic Gubernatorial Campaigns
Abrams began her career as a tax attorney before becoming Atlanta’s Deputy City Attorney in 2002. In 2006, she was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives, where she became the first Black woman to serve as Minority Leader in 2010. During her tenure, she fought against regressive tax policies and founded the New Georgia Project, a voter registration initiative targeting underrepresented communities.
In 2018, Abrams made history as the first Black woman to win a major party’s gubernatorial nomination in the U.S. Her campaign focused on expanding Medicaid, improving public education, and advocating for criminal justice reform. Despite a fiercely contested race against Republican Brian Kemp—then Georgia’s Secretary of State—Abrams narrowly lost amid allegations of voter suppression. Though she refused to concede, she channeled her frustration into activism, founding Fair Fight Action, an organization dedicated to protecting voting rights.
Her efforts were pivotal in Georgia’s historic 2020 election results, where Democrats flipped the state for President Joe Biden and secured two Senate seats. Many credited Abrams’ voter mobilization work for these victories.
In 2022, she ran for governor again but lost to Kemp in a rematch. Despite this setback, her influence in national politics remains undeniable.
Writing and Public Influence
Beyond politics, Abrams is a bestselling author. Her nonfiction works, including Minority Leader: How to Lead from the Outside and Make Real Change (2018) and Our Time Is Now (2020), explore leadership and democracy. She has also written a legal thriller, While Justice Sleeps (2021), and several children’s books.
Legacy and Net Worth
Stacey Abrams is widely regarded as a key figure in modern voting rights activism and Democratic strategy. While her exact net worth is undisclosed.
