Juvenal Sansó cause of death – Multi-awarded artist dies

MANILA, Philippines – Celebrated cultural icon Juvenal Sansó has passed away at the age of 95.

Leon Gallery and Fundacion Sansó confirmed his passing on Saturday, March 29. With a career spanning over seven decades, Sansó leaves behind a remarkable artistic legacy that has influenced both Philippine and international art.

As of now, no official cause of death has been disclosed by his family or representatives.

A Life Dedicated to Art

Sansó was a recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Presidential Medal of Merit Award from the Philippine government, the Order of Isabella from Spain, a knighthood from the King of Spain, and the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres from France. “In his long and productive life, Sansó established himself as one of the country’s most notable modernists, with more than 70 years of work,” Fundacion Sansó stated.

His legacy continues through Fundacion Sansó, which operates his museum, authenticates his works, and provides scholarships to aspiring artists and cultural workers across the Philippines.

Juvenal Sansó Artistic Journey

Born in Reus, Spain, on November 23, 1929, and raised in the Philippines, Sansó’s early artistic influences stemmed from his experiences during World War II. His initial works depicted scenes of war, but over time, he transitioned into more serene landscapes and floral compositions.

His works are housed in prestigious institutions such as the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris, MoMA in New York, and the National Museum of the Philippines. In 1964, his etching “Lueurs” was named Print of the Year by the Cleveland Museum of Art.

A public wake for Juvenal Sansó will be held at Heritage Memorial Park Chapels 7 & 8 in Taguig City on April 1 and 2, from 2 PM to 10 PM. A Mass will be held at 7 PM on both days.
