Johnny was born in Newport News, Virginia, on the 13th of July, 1924. Nonetheless, most of his formative years were spent in the bustling Californian city of Los Angeles. With age 23, Johnny Gilbert began his career in professional broadcasting with KFAB, an Omaha-based radio station. His abilities were soon recognized, and he began his more than 57-year association with ABC in 1963 when The Les Crane Show debuted. Apart from Jeopardy!, Gilbert has voiced a number of other popular game shows, including “Supermarket Sweep,” “The $10,000 Pyramid,” and “Chain Reaction.”

Johnny’s participation with Jeopardy! began in 1984, when his catchphrase “This is Jeopardy!” became linked with the franchise. Before host Alex Trebek took over, his mesmerizing voice set the tone for the quiz program. The seasoned announcer has appeared in over 8,000 episodes and continues to do so, consistently contributing to the show’s personality.

Gilbert is praised for his unrelenting commitment to his work and his role on Jeopardy!, which has granted him the distinction of being the longest-serving game show announcer in television history, as recognized by the Guinness World Records.

Gilbert was extremely moved by the death of Jeopardy! presenter Alex Trebek in 2020, with whom he had partnered and been friends for over 35 years. He resolved to continue working on the show to commemorate Trebek’s memory.
