Who was Manolo Reyes? Age, Career & Cause of Death
City of Miami Commissioner Manolo Reyes has passed away, his family announced on Friday. Reyes, who was 80 years old, had been hospitalized earlier in the week.
His Battle with Leukemia
In 2023, Reyes publicly revealed his battle with leukemia. However, the following year, he announced that the disease had gone into remission. Earlier this week, his family shared that his health had deteriorated significantly and requested prayers and privacy. While a cause of death has not been officially confirmed, his prior health struggles were widely known.
Political Career & Public Service
Reyes represented District 4 of Miami since 2017 and was a respected public servant. His district included Flagami and Coral Way, areas where he had lived for nearly five decades with his wife, Selva “Chacha” Reyes.
Miami Mayor Francis Suarez paid tribute to Reyes, describing him as “a devoted family man, fearless advocate, and true fighter” who remained dedicated to his community until the end.
Early Life & Education
Born in Victoria de Las Tunas, Cuba, Reyes and his parents migrated to the United States in 1959, seeking political refuge from Fidel Castro’s regime. He later graduated from the University of Florida in Gainesville and pursued a career in education and business.
Teaching & Business Ventures
Before entering politics, Reyes was a small business owner and an educator. He taught economics at Miami Dade College and Westland High School, where he led the school’s dual enrollment program with Florida International University (FIU).
Survived by Family
Manolo Reyes is survived by his wife, two adult children, and three grandchildren. His passing marks the loss of a dedicated leader who worked tirelessly for his community.
