Who is Indira Talwani? The Judge Who Blocked Trump’s Deportation Order!

15 April, 2025 13:48

US District Judge Indira Talwani recently made a significant ruling, temporarily blocking the deportation of over 500,000 immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.

These individuals had entered the United States legally through a Biden-era humanitarian parole program, which provided them with two-year work permits.

Talwani questioned the government’s rationale for stripping legal protections from individuals who had followed the proper legal procedures, citing a failure to provide a well-reasoned decision.

The court’s decision delays the deportation efforts, set to take effect on April 24, giving the judicial system time to review the administration’s legal justification. Judge Talwani raised concerns over why individuals who had undergone background checks, paid for their travel, and secured sponsor support were being treated as though they had entered the country illegally.

Indira Talwani, a daughter of immigrants from India and Germany, is a prominent Indian-American judge. She graduated cum laude from Harvard University before earning her Juris Doctor degree from UC Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law. At law school, she was honored with membership in the Order of the Coif and served as articles editor for the Industrial Relations Law Journal.

Talwani’s legal career began as a law clerk for US District Judge Stanley Weigel in California. She then worked as an associate and later a partner at a San Francisco law firm specializing in labor and employment litigation.

In 1999, she joined Segal Roitman LLP in Boston, where she continued her work representing workers in employment disputes and class actions.

Beyond her legal practice, Judge Talwani has contributed to the American Bar Association’s treatise on the Family and Medical Leave Act and has delivered lectures on employment rights and workplace law for various legal associations and labor organizations.

Her work has included union negotiations, arbitrations, and advocacy for fair workplace policies.
