Who is Yusoff Rawther? Acquitted of Drug Trafficking and Firearms Charges

12 June, 2025 15:55

KUALA LUMPUR – June 12, 2025: Muhammed Yusoff Rawther, 32, has been acquitted of all charges related to drug trafficking and the possession of imitation firearms by the Kuala Lumpur High Court.

High Court Judge Datuk Muhammad Jamil Hussin ruled that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against Yusoff. As a result, the judge ordered a full discharge and acquittal.

Judge: Suspicion Is Not Proof

In his judgment, Judge Jamil explained that the evidence brought before the court could not prove that Yusoff had exclusive control over the vehicle or the alleged illegal items found inside. The court concluded that the evidence only raised suspicion, which was not enough to support a criminal conviction.

“The accused was not alone when the police stopped the vehicle. There was no strong evidence showing he had full custody or control of the drugs and pistols,” the judge stated.

He also highlighted the time gap between when the car was parked and when police arrived, as well as the fact that the remote and manual keys used by Yusoff couldn’t open the driver’s door, weakening the prosecution’s claims.

Judge Jamil noted that Yusoff’s behaviour at the time of the police stop did not suggest he was aware of any drugs or weapons inside the vehicle.

“I find that the accused did not have knowledge of the two imitation pistols and the drugs. Based on all the evidence, it would not be safe to call upon the accused to enter his defence,” the judge said.

Crowd Cheers Verdict Outside Court

A large crowd—estimated at around 100 people, believed to be supporters of Yusoff—gathered outside the court complex from early morning. When news of the acquittal broke, the crowd erupted with chants of “takbir”, celebrating the legal victory.

Yusoff, visibly relieved, exited the courthouse alongside his legal team, greeted by cheers and congratulations.

The Charges

Yusoff was previously accused of:

  • Trafficking 305 grams of cannabis in a vehicle parked in front of a surau at the Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters at 10:15 AM on September 6, 2024.

  • Possessing two imitation pistols by a roadside near a condominium on Jalan Bukit Kiara at 9:25 AM the same day.

Both charges could have carried serious penalties under Malaysian law.

What’s Next?

With the charges now dismissed, Yusoff walks free. There has been no word yet from the prosecution on whether they intend to appeal the decision.
