Who is Astro Sharmishtha? Vedic Astrologer Faces Backlash After Air India Crash Comments

Sharmishtha, who identifies as an astrology practitioner, took to X on Thursday to express sorrow over the crash.
A self-proclaimed Vedic astrologer named Astro Sharmishtha is facing heavy criticism online after her old tweets predicting aviation tragedies resurfaced following the Air India AI171 crash in Ahmedabad. The crash claimed over 200 lives, shocking the entire nation.
What Did Sharmishtha Say?
Sharmishtha, who regularly shares astrology-based insights on X (formerly Twitter), posted a message expressing sorrow over the crash. However, she also linked the event to her previous astrological predictions.
“It is very unfortunate that we lost so many lives in Air India crash in Ahmedabad today,” she wrote. “Jupiter is yet to enter Ardra, and India’s Mars Mahadasha is yet to begin, yet so much has already started… Om Shanti.”
Her tweet, intended as a spiritual message, was seen by many as an insensitive way to promote her past predictions.
What Were Her Predictions?
In December 2024, she had posted: “Aviation sector will do better in 2025, also plane crash headlines may give us shock… When Jupiter will be in Gemini part of Mrigashira & Ardra… safety and security will be missing.”
Just a week before the Air India crash, she mentioned possible destruction in the aviation sector due to planetary transitions.
Public Backlash Online
Many users on X slammed her posts. Critics accused her of being opportunistic, using a national tragedy to gain attention. One user commented: “This is not the time for celestial commentary, it’s a time for empathy.”
Another wrote: “So all 250 victims had the same stars? This is disgraceful.”
Others pointed out that astrology should never replace empathy or be used to profit from sorrow.
Who Is Astro Sharmishtha?
Sharmishtha identifies as a Vedic astrology practitioner. She often posts predictions about politics, weather events, and aviation trends. She has a considerable following online, especially among those who believe in planetary effects on human life.
Despite the backlash, she has not deleted her tweets. In fact, she has limited replies on her account, stating she is “unable to respond to everyone.”
Divided Opinions
While some of her followers defended her right to express spiritual insight, the majority called for more compassion and less self-promotion.
“There’s no need to be a dick, even unintentionally,” wrote one user, reflecting the frustration of many.
