Mohan Raj, also known in the film industry as SM Raju, was a respected and veteran stunt performer in South Indian cinema. He tragically lost his life on Sunday, July 13, 2025, while performing a high-risk car stunt for the upcoming Tamil gangster film Vettuvam, directed by Pa Ranjith and starring actor Arya.

The Accident on the Sets of Vettuvam

The fatal incident occurred during the filming of a daring car crash scene in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu. Raju was driving an SUV meant to launch off a ramp and crash upon landing. However, the vehicle somersaulted mid-air and hit the ground forcefully on its front side.

Raju sustained severe chest injuries and was immediately rushed to the Nagapattinam Government Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival. A video of the accident has since gone viral, showing crew members rushing to the vehicle in panic.

Industry Mourns the Loss

The tragic news sent shockwaves through the Tamil film industry.

Actor Vishal, who had worked with Raju on many action films, posted an emotional tribute on X (formerly Twitter): “My deepest condolences and may his soul rest in peace. May God give more strength to his family… From the bottom of my heart, I extend my support.”

Stunt choreographer Silva called Raju one of the best car stunt performers in Indian cinema, acknowledging his valuable contributions to Tamil films over the years.
