Who Is Mike Vasse? Jersey Sea Scout Volunteer Changing Lives for Decades

Mike Vasse, a long-time volunteer from Jersey, has been helping children learn vital water skills for over 30 years. He has played a major role in forming the Jersey Sea Scouts and teaching children how to become confident and independent.

Mr. Vasse has now been nominated for the BBC Radio Jersey Make a Difference Awards for his continuous service to the community.

Teaching Independence Through Scouting

The Sea Scouts is a group that teaches young people important outdoor skills like kayaking, power boating, and camping. Mike says that the main aim is to give children a strong sense of independence.

“We teach them enough so that when they leave home or go to university, they can take care of themselves,” said Mike.

He also praised the team behind the Scouts. Two young leaders are currently learning leadership by assisting with group activities, which Mike sees as part of the full scouting experience.

A Mentor and a Support System

Mr. Vasse has not only been a mentor but has also received support from the group. After the sudden death of his wife, he said the Sea Scouts were there for him.

“Without them, I would’ve struggled. They’re always there for me,” he shared.

Inspired Leaders Speak Up

Julian, now a leader in the Jersey Sea Scouts, said that Mike helped him through all his training. He described Mike as someone he continues to learn from, even after 10 years in the group.

Sam Wiseman, another volunteer and leader, nominated Mike for the award. She said: “Mike is a role model. He helped my own children when they were Sea Scouts. They still look up to him today.”

She added that volunteers like Mike are the reason activities for kids are possible.
