Charlie Day is best known for playing the hilarious Charlie Kelly in the long-running comedy It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. But outside of TV, fans are curious about his personal life — especially his wife, Mary Elizabeth Ellis.

So who is she? What does she do? And how did their relationship start? Here’s everything you need to know.

Who Is Charlie Day Married To?

Charlie Day is married to Mary Elizabeth Ellis.

They got married in March 2006 in New Orleans, and their bond has remained strong ever since. Before getting married, they worked together on the show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

In fact, their chemistry was noticed even earlier when they auditioned together for an episode of Reno 911! They went in pretending to be brother and sister — and then surprised the casting directors by making out during the improv audition. It worked. They were cast instantly.

In 2011, the couple welcomed their son, Russell Wallace.

What Does Mary Elizabeth Ellis Do?

Mary Elizabeth Ellis is a professional actress.

She was born in Mississippi and went to Southern Methodist University. Before making it in Hollywood, she worked many jobs — including being a hostess at Olive Garden and catering at a Jewish Cultural Center in Los Angeles.

Her breakout role came as The Waitress in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia — a character famously obsessed with Charlie (in the show and in real life!).

Some of her other well-known projects include:

  • New Girl

  • Santa Clarita Diet

  • Perfect Couples (NBC)

  • The Grinder

  • Red One (recent movie with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson)

Charlie Day & Mary Elizabeth Ellis’ Relationship Story

Charlie and Mary first met in 2001 at a bar.

Day recalled the moment during an interview on Hot Ones, saying he had just beaten his (very skinny) friend in an arm-wrestling contest. After winning, he gathered the confidence to approach Mary — and the rest is history.

“We arm-wrestled and I won, and I met my wife,” he said with a laugh.

Their love story has lasted for over two decades, both on-screen and off-screen.
