Who is Jason Whittingham? Wife, Wikipedia, Bond Group, Biography & Net Worth

05 August, 2025 15:24

The National League announced the suspension of Morecambe FC. The club failed to meet important financial rules. This situation has shocked fans and put the club’s future at serious risk.

At the center of this crisis is Jason Whittingham, a businessman and owner of the club. His decisions, past business record, and failed takeovers have all contributed to the current problems.

Who is Jason Whittingham?

  • Full Name: Jason Whittingham

  • Nationality: British

  • Occupation: Investor, Company Director

  • Notable roles: Owner of Morecambe FC, former co-owner of Worcester Warriors RFC

  • Company: Bond Group Investments

  • Former business partner: Colin Goldring

  • Estimated net worth: £3 million (based on media reports)

  • Known for: Business collapses, sports ownership issues, and financial controversy

Business Background

Jason Whittingham has a long and controversial business history.

He has been involved in 25 companies over the years. Out of these, 18 companies have failed. Some were liquidated. Others were struck off or put into administration. Many of these businesses were managed with Colin Goldring, who was later banned from practicing law.

In 2022, both Whittingham and Goldring were banned from being company directors for 12 months. Despite this, Whittingham remained involved in Morecambe FC.

Morecambe FC Ownership

Whittingham’s company, Bond Group, bought Morecambe FC in May 2018. At first, fans hoped it would bring growth and better performance. But the reality has been the opposite.

Here’s what happened:

  • 2018: Bond Group buys the club.

  • 2021: Team reaches League One.

  • 2022: Club put up for sale.

  • 2023–24: Team suffers two relegations.

  • July 2025: Staff are paid only one-third of wages.

  • 28 July 2025: Club is suspended by the National League.

Financial Trouble

The National League said the club has “serious concerns”. They are not sure Morecambe can finish the new season. The league postponed their first three matches.

The compliance committee will meet again on 20 August 2025. If Morecambe cannot show proof of funding, they may be kicked out of the league.

Whittingham has missed several deadlines to sell the club. He has also not provided enough financial details to the league.

Takeover Problems

Two takeover groups tried to buy Morecambe. Both deals failed.

1. Jonny Cato Consortium

Whittingham said Cato was ready to buy. But no one could confirm who Cato was. No such businessman was found in UK records. The only public “Jonny Cato” is a Swedish politician, not a football investor.

2. Panjab Warriors

This group claimed they already invested money. Their company, JKM Capital, had only £100 in their bank records. The group also went silent in early August, and the deal collapsed.

These failed sales have frustrated fans and raised doubts about Whittingham’s commitment to the club.

Worcester Warriors Collapse

Before Morecambe, Whittingham and Goldring also owned Worcester Warriors RFC, a professional rugby team. That club went into liquidation in 2022. It was suspended from the league. Players lost jobs. The owners faced heavy criticism.

Fans and Community React

Supporters are angry. They held protests at games. Some called Whittingham a “disgrace.” MP Lizzi Collinge and the Shrimps Trust are pushing for a quick sale.

A local fan said, “It feels like the club is dying in front of us.”

Without urgent action, Morecambe FC could face the same fate as Bury FC, which was expelled from the EFL in 2019.

What’s Next?

The clock is ticking. The National League gave Morecambe until 20 August. They must prove they can pay wages, finish the season, and have secure ownership.

If they fail, the 105-year-old club may be expelled or even folded.
