Luis Alberto Cancino Mena, a 39-year-old man from Chile, was sentenced at Waverley Local Court in Sydney, Australia. He pleaded guilty to secretly filming three women while they were showering. He used a small hidden device known as a pen camera.
The disturbing recordings were made inside a shared house in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, where Mena was living. His actions remained unnoticed for several months until cleaners discovered the device on the bathroom floor in February 2025. The cleaners found it was still recording. When they checked the footage, they saw video clips of a woman showering without clothes.
Police were contacted immediately. Investigators later found Mena’s laptop. On it, there were folders named after the victims. Each folder had videos saved from the hidden camera. One video even showed Mena setting up the camera in the bathroom.
Magistrate Michael Barko sentenced Mena to a nine-month intensive corrections order. This means he must follow strict rules under supervision in the community. If he breaks any of the terms, he could go to jail.
The magistrate said the victims may suffer emotional stress for the rest of their lives. He called the crime a serious violation of privacy, especially when adult content is so easy to find online. Barko also said, “The Australian public doesn’t want him here,” after Mena expressed a wish to return to Chile.
Mena was also given an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO). He is banned from contacting the victims for two years. He must also stay under supervision by a Community Corrections Officer.
