Who is Stephen Curry’s Dad Dell Curry? A Look at the Former NBA Star’s Career and Legacy
Stephen Curry may be one of the biggest names in basketball today, but his father, Dell Curry, also enjoyed a remarkable NBA career. Playing primarily as a shooting guard, Dell made his mark with the Charlotte Hornets, leading the team during his time there, and also represented franchises like the Utah Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers, Milwaukee Bucks, and Toronto Raptors. His stellar performance earned him the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award in 1994, and he now works as a commentator for the Hornets.
Dell’s journey in basketball began early. In 1982, he was named Virginia Mr. Basketball, and in 1986, he was drafted 15th overall by the Utah Jazz. However, his most celebrated years were with the Hornets, where he played for 10 seasons and became the franchise’s all-time leader at the time of his retirement. Since 2009, he has been a key voice in the Hornets’ television broadcasts.
Off the court, Dell married Sonya Curry, and together they had three children—Stephen, Seth, and Sydel. The couple parted ways in 2021 after 33 years of marriage.
Dell’s bond with Stephen is especially strong. He has been present for many of his son’s biggest moments, including the 2022 NBA Finals. “I didn’t even know [Dell] was down there, to be honest with you,” Stephen Curry recalled. “I saw him and I lost it… I just wanted to take in the moment because it was that special.”
From father to son, basketball is clearly a legacy in the Curry family.
