Ísadóra Bjarkardóttir Barney, also known as Doa, the talented 22-year-old daughter of the legendary Icelandic singer Björk, has made a notable return to the fashion world.

Last Friday at Copenhagen Fashion Week, Doa opened the Cecilie Bahnsen 10-year anniversary show, wearing a white tulle dress adorned with bows and floral appliqués. She paired the delicate look with white knee socks and trainers, while her brunette bob and shimmering silver makeup highlighted the intricate details of the outfit.

The Danish label Cecilie Bahnsen, celebrated for its romantic and sculptural designs, named the show “Hana-bi,” the Japanese word for fireworks. The collection began with white pieces before transitioning into silver. Bahnsen explained, “I always start a new collection with white; it feels like a blank canvas.”

Doa made her runway debut with Miu Miu for their autumn/winter 2022 campaign, joining other ambassadors such as Sydney Sweeney, Emily Ratajkowski, and Demi Singleton. She also walked in Miu Miu’s spring/summer 2023 show at Paris Fashion Week in October 2022.

Who is Doa aka Ísadóra Bjarkardóttir Barney?

Born in London, Doa is the daughter of Björk and her second husband, American visual artist Matthew Barney. The couple separated in 2013, with Barney filing for custody, claiming he was not granted enough time with their daughter. Their split inspired Björk’s song “Black Lake” from the album Vulnicura.

Doa spent time studying in Reykjavík, Iceland, and Brooklyn, New York, during autumn and spring semesters. After finishing high school, she enrolled at Pitzer College in Southern California, though it remains unclear if she completed her degree.

Her mother has been a strong supporter of her acting ambitions. In a 2022 interview with The Face, Doa shared, “Since I was 13 or 14, I knew I wanted to take acting seriously. And she knew that. So she’s been so supportive. It was important to her that she would help me realise this.”

Before graduating high school, Doa appeared in the film The Northman, acting alongside Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, and her mother during the pandemic. Around that time, Björk encouraged her to create a film as a birthday gift, which led Doa to produce her first nine-minute short, Almanak, uploaded to YouTube in November 2020.

Musical talents

In addition to modeling and acting, Doa is also a musician. She released her debut single “bergmál” in January 2023 as part of the Reykjavík art collective Post-Dreifing. The track features layered harmonies, handclaps, and simple plucked strings, and appears on Post-Dreifing’s album Drullumall 4.

In 2022, she collaborated with her mother on “Her Mother’s House” from the album Fossora, exploring the complex feelings of leaving home. Doa has also contributed to other musical projects, such as recording Joanna Newsom’s “’81” in 2021 to support Refugees International.
