Welsh Labour politician Hefin David has died suddenly at the age of 47. He was the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Caerphilly since 2016.

Gwent Police said a 47-year-old man was found unresponsive at a property in Nelson, Caerphilly county, on Tuesday evening. Police confirmed the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Hefin’s partner is Vikki Howells, the Cynon Valley MS and minister for further and higher education in the Welsh Labour government.

The First Minister said: “We are extremely saddened by the sudden death of Hefin. Our thoughts are with his family at this terrible time.”

She added that Hefin was a “much-loved member of the Labour family.” He served Caerphilly with pride and passion, both as a councillor and as a Member of the Senedd.

Eluned Morgan described Hefin as “warm and enthusiastic,” and “a great communicator,” especially when speaking for his constituents.

Mark Hobrough, Chief Constable of Gwent Police, also expressed his condolences. He said he had worked closely with Hefin many times.
