New Delhi, August 20, 2025 – Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked on Wednesday morning during a public program, leaving her injured. The shocking incident took place around 8 AM at Civil Lines, when a man suddenly confronted her during a Jan Sunvai (public hearing).

Who Is Rajesh Khimji Sakariya?

The attacker has been identified as 41-year-old Rajesh Khimji Sakariya, a resident of Rajkot district in Gujarat. According to initial reports, Sakariya approached the CM with a set of documents, believed to be related to his relatives lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail. Moments later, he allegedly laughed and then launched an attack.

Eyewitness Account

An eyewitness revealed that Sakariya first handed over papers to the CM, and then suddenly grabbed her hand forcefully. This caused Rekha Gupta to lose her balance and hit her head on the table. She was immediately rushed for a medical check-up.

However, another version from Delhi Police sources claimed that a heavy object was thrown at Gupta, which led to her injury. The police are still investigating to confirm the exact sequence of events.

Police Action

The accused was quickly overpowered by local police and taken into custody. He is currently being interrogated at the Civil Lines Police Station. His family members have also been called in for questioning.

What Locals Say About Him

Neighbours of Rajesh Khimji Sakariya in Rajkot described him as a “simple and generous man” with a known love for animals. One neighbour, Sureshbhai, said he had known Sakariya for the last 5–6 years and never expected such an act from him.

Political Reaction

Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva condemned the attack, stating that security of the Chief Minister must be reviewed. The Union Home Ministry has also been informed.

The investigation is ongoing, and police are verifying whether the attack was a planned act or an impulsive outburst connected to his personal grievances.
