Who is Suing Cardi B? All about Emani Ellis
Rapper Cardi B is currently facing a civil trial after being accused of assaulting a security guard during a private doctor’s appointment back in 2018. The lawsuit was filed by Emani Ellis, who claims she was attacked, insulted, and spat on by the rapper.
The trial, held in Los Angeles, has gained massive attention as Cardi B continues to defend herself on the witness stand.
What Happened in 2018?
The alleged incident took place on February 24, 2018, at a Beverly Hills medical office. Cardi B, who was about four months pregnant at the time, went for a private checkup with her obstetrician. According to Ellis, she was working security in the building when she had an unexpected encounter with the rapper.
Ellis claims Cardi B suddenly turned aggressive after realizing the guard recognized her. In her lawsuit, Ellis said Cardi B hit her head, face, and body, spat on her, used racial slurs, and left her scarred both physically and emotionally.
The security guard also accused Cardi B’s team of trying to erase all recorded footage of the incident.
What Cardi B Says
Cardi B, whose real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, strongly denies the allegations. She admitted that she and Ellis were “chest-to-chest” during a heated argument but said there was no physical assault.
The rapper testified that Ellis was loudly announcing her presence and may have tried recording her on a phone, which invaded her privacy. Cardi B said the confrontation lasted less than 90 seconds before a receptionist and her doctor intervened.
She also stated that she never spat on Ellis, never scratched her, and never used racial slurs. Cardi B pointed out that her nails at the time were flat “coffin-style” rhinestone nails, which could not have caused scratches.
The Trial Testimonies
The courtroom has heard from several witnesses and experts:
Emani Ellis testified that Cardi B scratched her face, spat on her, and insulted her. She said she has since suffered from anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
A plastic surgeon, Dr. Brent Moelleken, confirmed treating Ellis in 2022 for scars that appeared consistent with fingernail injuries.
Cardi B’s gynecologist, Dr. David Finke, recalled seeing shouting and finger-pointing but testified that he did not see Cardi B hit Ellis or cause injuries.
A receptionist, Tierra Malcolm, supported Cardi’s version, saying Ellis was cursing loudly and aggressive, and that she saw no visible injuries on Ellis.
A psychiatrist who examined Ellis suggested her reported trauma symptoms may have been exaggerated.
What Ellis Wants
In her lawsuit, Ellis is seeking:
Coverage of medical expenses
Damages for loss of income
Compensation for emotional distress
Punitive damages
A civil penalty of $25,000
