Who is Stanislav Nikulytsia? Boyfriend of Ukrainian Refugee Iryna Zarutska Killed in US Train Stabbing
September 12, 2025 – A heartbreaking story has emerged from North Carolina after the tragic killing of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska. The 23-year-old was stabbed to death on a light-rail train in an attack that shocked the community. Her boyfriend, Stanislav Nikulytsia, 21, is now speaking out against the justice system that allowed the suspect to remain free.
The Tragic Incident on August 22
On August 22, 2025, Iryna boarded a light-rail train in North Carolina. CCTV footage shows her sitting in front of Decarlos Brown Jr, a man with a long criminal history. Without warning, Brown pulled out a pocketknife and slashed her neck. Passengers screamed as Iryna collapsed, and she died at the scene.
Her family said they became worried when she did not return home. A phone tracker showed she was still at the station. By the time they arrived, the young woman had already lost her life.
Who is Stanislav Nikulytsia?
Stanislav Nikulytsia is a 21-year-old Ukrainian who was in a relationship with Iryna. He often shared photos with her on Instagram, showing their close bond. After her death, he posted a picture of them together with a heart emoji, expressing his grief.
He also reposted strong criticism of Magistrate Judge Teresa Stokes, who freed Brown on bail months before the killing, despite his 14 prior arrests. Stanislav, along with many others, believes this decision cost Iryna her life.
A Refugee Seeking Safety
Iryna had survived the war in Ukraine and had even lived in a bomb shelter. She moved to the United States in search of a safer life. Her relatives described her as hardworking and determined to build a future. Tragically, her dreams were cut short in what investigators called a random attack.
Who is the Suspect?
The attacker, Decarlos Brown Jr, has a long criminal record, including robbery with a dangerous weapon. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia and had been arrested earlier this year for repeated emergency calls. His own mother had tried to get him committed for psychiatric treatment.
Despite these warnings, he was released without bail. A psychological exam was ordered in July, but it was never completed before the August attack.
Now, Brown faces federal charges for causing death on a mass transportation system. He also faces a state case for first-degree murder. If convicted, he could face life in prison or even the death penalty.
Justice Demands
Stanislav Nikulytsia and Iryna’s family are now calling for justice. They believe her death could have been prevented if the system had acted responsibly. The case has sparked debate about mental health, criminal justice, and public safety in the United States.
