On Saturday, September 21, 2025, tragedy struck at the Growler Pines Tiger Preserve in Hugo, Oklahoma, when Ryan Easley, a longtime big cat handler and former associate of Tiger King star Joe Exotic, was killed by a tiger during what the facility described as an “accident.”
Who Was Ryan Easley?
Ryan Easley was a wildlife caretaker, trainer, and operator of Growler Pines Tiger Preserve, a private sanctuary offering guided tours and big cat demonstrations. Known for his close work with tigers, Easley dedicated much of his life to the care and training of large predators.
His preserve confirmed his death in a Facebook post, writing: “The animals under his care were not just animals to him, but beings he connected with through respect, daily care, and love. Growler Pines was not just a workplace for Ryan. It was his calling, his passion, and his life’s purpose.”
Easley’s Connection to Joe Exotic
Easley was previously linked to Joe Exotic (Joe Maldonado), the controversial zoo operator made famous by Netflix’s Tiger King. According to PETA, Easley obtained tigers from Joe Exotic and used them for his traveling show, “ShowMe Tigers.”
The animal rights group claimed he transported big cats across the country and forced them to perform in circuses.
PETA’s Response
Following his death, PETA issued a strong statement:
They argued that Easley’s work highlighted the dangers of direct human interaction with apex predators.
Debbie Metzler, senior director of captive wildlife at the PETA Foundation, said: “It’s never safe for humans to interact directly with apex predators, and it’s never shocking when a big cat lashes out after being caged, whipped, and denied everything natural and important to them.”
The group urged all private exhibitors to send their animals to accredited sanctuaries.
Legacy and Impact
Despite criticism from animal rights groups, Easley’s colleagues remembered him as a devoted caretaker who had a deep connection with the tigers he raised and trained.
His death has prompted the suspension of all public tours and demonstrations at Growler Pines until further notice. An investigation is ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
