Former Syracuse basketball legend Lawrence Moten has passed away at the age of 52. He was found unresponsive at his home in Washington, D.C. His daughter, Lawrencia Moten, confirmed the heartbreaking news. The exact cause of death has not yet been revealed.
Lawrence Moten’s Basketball Career
Lawrence Moten was one of Syracuse University’s greatest players. From 1991 to 1995, he became the all-time leading scorer in the university’s history. Known by his nickname “Poetry in Moten,” his smooth playing style made him a standout on the court.
He went on to play three seasons in the NBA and later worked as an assistant coach at Gallaudet University. In June 2025, reports confirmed that Moten had taken on a basketball general manager role at Digital Pioneers Academy.
His Wife Noelene and Family Life
Moten is survived by his wife, Noelene Abigail Moten, and their two daughters, Lawrencia and Leilani.
Noelene Moten worked as a professional school counselor at Prince George’s County Public Schools from 2018 to 2024.
Lawrencia Moten, the elder daughter, is a sports commentator and sideline reporter. She currently works with HBCU Go and Liberty University covering college sports.
Leilani Moten, the youngest, pursued a career in finance. She worked as a Private Banking Analyst at J.P. Morgan before joining Merrill Lynch Wealth Management as a financial solutions adviser in April 2025.
The family stood proudly by Lawrence’s side throughout his basketball career and his later professional journey.

Legendary Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, who recruited and coached Moten, paid tribute to his former player. He described Moten as “an underrated player” and remembered his effortless style of play.
Boeheim said:
“He was just so good for so long and tremendously loyal to the program. Just a great person. Great father. Great man. This is a sad day. Syracuse basketball is sad today.”
Fans also shared heartfelt tributes on social media, recalling Moten’s humility, kindness, and his willingness to engage with supporters before and after games.
