Who is Sarah Mullally? First Woman Named Archbishop of Canterbury

03 October, 2025 14:25

On Friday, October 3, 2025, Dame Sarah Mullally was officially named as the new Archbishop of Canterbury. She is the first woman in history to hold this role in the Church of England.

She will replace Justin Welby, who resigned last year after criticism over his handling of the Church’s child abuse scandal.

A formal installation ceremony will take place at Canterbury Cathedral in the coming months.

From Nursing to Church Leadership

Before joining the Church, Dame Sarah had a long career in healthcare. She worked as England’s Chief Nursing Officer until 2004, when she left to focus fully on her ministry.

She was ordained in 2001 and served as a priest in the London borough of Sutton. In 2017, she became the Bishop of London, the Church’s third most senior role.

In 2005, she was made a Dame for her services to nursing and midwifery.

Challenges Ahead

Dame Sarah takes charge at a difficult time. The Church is facing:

  • Deep divisions over same-sex blessings

  • Declining church attendance since the pandemic

  • Ongoing debates about safeguarding scandals

She has spoken openly about these challenges. In 2023, after the Church voted to allow blessings for same-sex couples, she called it a “moment of hope,” while admitting it left many people unhappy on both sides.

On safeguarding, she has promised to improve how the Church protects children and vulnerable people.

Role in Politics and Social Debates

As Archbishop, Dame Sarah will also sit in the House of Lords. She has already been a senior bishop there since 2018.

Recently, she opposed the assisted dying Bill, arguing it could never be made completely safe. She told Parliament that “choice is an illusion” and warned of dangerous consequences.

Who is Sarah Mullally Husband?

Sarah Mullally is married to Eamonn Mullally, a consultant general surgeon. The couple has two children together. While Dame Sarah has always been in the public eye due to her roles in healthcare and the Church of England, her husband has largely remained private, focusing on his medical career. Their marriage has been described as supportive, with both balancing demanding professional lives alongside family responsibilities.
