Who is Sara Bareilles’ Husband Joe Tippett? Inside Their 10-Year Love Story On and Off Stage

08 October, 2025 12:50

Sara Bareilles and Joe Tippett have officially tied the knot.

The Grammy-winning singer announced on Instagram in October 2025 that she and the Mare of Easttown actor “did a big thing” and got married in front of their loved ones.

“I will just say I love this man and I love the community who came to hold us up,” Bareilles captioned her post, sharing photos from their celebration. “I am feeling so lucky and so grateful.”

The couple first met in 2015 while working on the musical Waitress during its out-of-town tryout at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Bareilles wrote the score for the show, while Tippett played Earl, the moody husband of the story’s protagonist, Jenna.

In 2017, they made their relationship public, appearing together at several events, including the opening night of All the Fine Boys, PEOPLE and EW’s Upfronts Party, and the 2017 Tony Awards.

On New Year’s Day in 2023, Bareilles announced her engagement to Tippett, writing, “Yes to marrying this man. It’s an easy, earned, relaxed YES.”

He Has Starred in Waitress Several Times

After making his Broadway debut in Airline Highway in 2015, Tippett played Earl Hunterson in the American Repertory Theater production of Waitress. Though he did not transfer with the show when it moved to Broadway in April 2016, he joined the Broadway cast a year later, succeeding Will Swenson.

When Waitress returned for a limited engagement in 2021, Tippett reprised his role as Earl alongside Bareilles, who played Jenna.

He’s an Actor

Beyond his stage work, Tippett has appeared in several television shows and films. He portrayed Coach Sam Strickland in NBC’s Rise and Doolittle “Mooney” Lynn in the Lifetime movie Patsy & Loretta.

He also starred in the 2021 miniseries Mare of Easttown with Kate Winslet and appeared in the 2022 musical film Spirited with Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds. His other credits include The Morning Show, American Primeval, and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

His Brother Got Him Into Theater

Tippett told Broadway.com that his brother inspired him to join theater when his school’s production of Bye Bye Birdie needed more cast members. He later earned a full scholarship to West Virginia University, which he jokingly called “the Juilliard of Appalachia.”

“Then I dropped out of college because I was also taking drinking very seriously,” Tippett said in a 2015 interview. “My BAC was higher than my GPA.”

He became sober in 2016. In 2025, Bareilles celebrated the ninth anniversary of his sobriety on Instagram, saying she was “so proud” of him.

He Played Football in High School

Before acting, Tippett was an athlete at Damascus High School in Damascus, Maryland, where he played football.

“I could’ve gone to college on an athletic scholarship, but I’d started dabbling in theatre and became interested in that,” he told StageBuddy in 2017.

He and Bareilles Went Public in 2017

After working together on Waitress, the couple went public in 2017, appearing together at the opening night of All the Fine Boys, starring Tippett. They also attended the 2017 Tony Awards, where Bareilles presented on stage.

In June 2023, they returned to the Tony Awards when Bareilles was nominated for Leading Actress in a Musical for Into the Woods. They celebrated eight years together that September, with Bareilles writing on Instagram, “@joetipps you are infinite and you fascinate me… you are my favorite and most unpredictable person.”

Tippett shared his own post, writing, “I love the way you love me… Knowing my soul is braided together with yours means I will never not have a home.”

They Got Engaged in 2023

In January 2023, the couple announced their engagement. Tippett proposed with a unique gold feather band.

“@joetipps you are exactly who I want. The more I know you the more I know I love you,” Bareilles wrote. “Let the games begin. Onward into absolutely everything with you.”

In March 2024, she told PEOPLE that she wanted their wedding to focus on “delicious food and people being warm,” adding, “I want to be rooted in the joy and the celebration of finding someone I love this much.”

They Got Married in October 2025

Bareilles and Tippett married on October 4, 2025. Tippett shared the news on Instagram with the caption, “Marrying My Best Friend Today. May We All Be So Lucky,” alongside a photo of the two.

Days later, Bareilles posted several pictures from their big day, including one of her walking down the aisle with their dog, Louie.
