Why Chandler Moore Filed a Lawsuit Against Maverick City Music? Here’s What Happened
Chandler Moore, co-founder of the Grammy-winning Christian collective Maverick City Music, has filed a lawsuit against his former band, its label TRIBL Records, and Norman Gyanfi, who previously worked as Moore’s personal manager before becoming the band’s co-owner in 2023.
For context, Maverick City Music debuted in 2018 as a Christian music collective that brought together 100 singers and songwriters across 17 songwriting camps. The collaboration resulted in the creation of a label and over a thousand songs. Since then, the group has earned five Grammy Awards.
Moore announced his departure from the band on Monday, October 6, through social media, stating that he would continue his music career independently.
According to multiple reports, Moore filed the lawsuit on October 1 in the Atlanta federal court, accusing Maverick City Music, its CEO, and TRIBL Records of fraudulent business practices. He alleged that Norman Gyanfi abused his position to obtain ownership stakes, commissions, and publishing rights without consent, taking millions of dollars from him.
Court documents further claim that Gyanfi sold the band’s masters to The Orchard, a Sony subsidiary, in 2021. He also allegedly forged Moore’s signature on documents in 2022 and redirected his royalty payments into the band’s accounts. Moore claimed he was defrauded of more than $800,000.
In response, Maverick City Music’s CEO and co-founder Jonathan Jay issued a statement on Instagram on Wednesday, October 8, rejecting Moore’s allegations. Jay described the claims against the company, Gyanfi, and the band as false.

He asserted that Moore was not misunderstood but rather “calculating,” accusing him of fabricating a false narrative to avoid honoring agreements he had made and later breached. Jay concluded by affirming that the band would continue to create music “in the name of Jesus,” emphasizing that their mission is “bigger than any one person.”
