Ben Thompson, a familiar face to BBC viewers across the UK, has built an impressive career that frequently sees him fronting BBC Breakfast.

Early Life and Education

Born on August 12, 1981, in Burnley, England, Ben Thompson began his journey with the BBC in 2001. His first role was at Radio Wales in Cardiff, where, while studying at university, he produced the morning news programme Good Morning Wales. Recognized for his potential, he was selected for the BBC Trainee Scheme.

After earning a degree in international business and French, followed by a postgraduate diploma in Broadcast Journalism, Ben moved to London to join BBC News.

Career Journey

Initially starting behind the scenes as a producer, Ben soon transitioned to on-screen reporting. His first major posting came in 2008 as the BBC’s Middle East Business Correspondent, based in Dubai for three years. He later returned to the UK as Business Presenter for the BBC News Channel.

Ben’s career then took him to New York, where he served as the BBC’s North America Business Correspondent. During his tenure, he covered major stories, including Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and the US Presidential Elections.

BBC Breakfast and Business Programmes

Ben first joined BBC Breakfast as a producer before stepping into a presenting role in 2011. He is widely known for filling in when the show’s main presenters are away and for his work co-hosting Business Live, the BBC’s daily business programme broadcast globally on the BBC News Channel and BBC World News.

He also fronted World Business Report until May 2024, when he announced its end after more than three decades on air. Addressing viewers, Ben said:

It’s had quite a few different looks over the years, but it’s time for a new look and a new name. Personal Life

Ben describes himself as a northerner and a traveller, with interests in photography, music, and theatre.

He has been in a long-term relationship with Andy Roche since 2011. Although the pair are not married, they frequently share photos together on social media. In 2021, they celebrated their ten-year anniversary, with Ben writing on Instagram:

“Happy ten years @andyroche. Can’t believe you’ve put up with me for ten actual whole years. Love you.”
