Who is Celtic Manager after Brendan Rodgers Resigns? Martin O’Neill Takes Interim Charge

28 October, 2025 13:23

Celtic Football Club confirmed on Monday, October 27, 2025, that manager Brendan Rodgers has resigned from his position with immediate effect. The decision comes after a disappointing start to the season, which included back-to-back league defeats and an early exit from the Champions League qualifiers.

Rodgers, 52, ended his second spell at Celtic Park after facing increasing criticism from fans and the board. His final game in charge was a 3-1 league loss against Hearts, leaving the defending champions eight points behind the top spot.

In an official club statement, Celtic said: “Brendan Rodgers has today tendered his resignation. It has been accepted by the Club, and Brendan will leave his role with immediate effect.”

Martin O’Neill Named Interim Manager

Following Rodgers’ departure, Celtic appointed Martin O’Neill as the interim manager. The 73-year-old, who previously managed Celtic from 2000 to 2005, will take charge of the team along with former Celtic player Shaun Maloney.

O’Neill is remembered fondly by fans for his successful first spell at the club. Under his leadership, Celtic won three Scottish Premiership titles, three Scottish Cups, one League Cup, and reached the 2003 UEFA Cup final.

The club expressed confidence in O’Neill’s experience, stating that his return would “bring stability and leadership” during this transitional period.

Dermot Desmond Criticizes Rodgers’ Conduct

Celtic’s largest individual shareholder, Dermot Desmond, released a strong statement criticizing Rodgers for what he called “divisive and misleading” behavior.

Desmond revealed that the club had offered Rodgers a contract extension just months ago, but the manager later claimed in press conferences that no such offer had been made. “That was simply untrue,” Desmond said.

He added that Rodgers had full control over football matters and was supported with “record investment” in players he personally selected. However, Desmond accused Rodgers of creating a toxic atmosphere around the club and undermining its leadership.

Rodgers Leaves After Mixed Second Spell

Brendan Rodgers rejoined Celtic in 2023 for a second stint after managing Leicester City in the Premier League. During this period, he guided the team to two league titles but struggled this season with inconsistent results and fan pressure.

Despite his sudden exit, the club thanked Rodgers for his contributions, saying, “Brendan leaves Celtic with our gratitude for his role in the club’s continued success. We wish him all the best in the future.”

With O’Neill back in charge, fans are hopeful for a strong turnaround as Celtic look to regain momentum in both the league and European competitions.
