Who is Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal? Ex–Bangladesh Home Minister Sentenced to Death
A court in Bangladesh gave a big decision. It was given on a recent day. The court sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death. It also gave the death penalty to Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. He is the former Home Minister of the country.
They were found guilty of “crimes against humanity.” The court said these crimes happened last year. At that time, there were huge student protests. These protests forced the Awami League government to fall.
Sheikh Hasina was not in the country for the trial. She was tried in absentia. Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was also not present. He is believed to be a fugitive. The court has asked both of them to appear. It said if they do not come, it might suggest they are guilty.
Another person was also on trial. He is the ex-police chief, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun. He did not get the death sentence. Instead, he was sent to prison for five years.
So, who is Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal?
He is a very important political figure. He fought for Bangladesh’s freedom in the 1971 Liberation War. Later, he served as the Home Minister. He held this powerful job for three terms in a row. He also had many other roles in parliament and public service.
Now, he faces very serious charges. These include murder and corruption. The country’s Anti-Corruption Commission is also investigating him. They are looking into claims that he gathered illegal wealth.
After the verdict, Kamal spoke to a news channel. He said the case is completely fake. He claimed it is a conspiracy for revenge. He said this revenge is for what happened during the 1971 war.
He strongly criticized the court proceedings. He said the trial was not transparent. He also said it had no credibility. He made a big allegation. He said the chief justice did not come to court for 15 days. He said the judge prepared the decision alone. He called the whole process “pure drama.”
He also questioned the evidence. He talked about digital evidence. He said Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used to change anything. He said there is no physical proof against him. He asked how a person can be convicted only with digital evidence. He insisted the case is not reliable.
