Who is Alexandrea Martin’s husband? Whoopi Goldberg Becomes Grandmother Again

Whoopi Goldberg shared heartwarming family news on the December 8 episode of The View, announcing that her grandson has welcomed a baby girl named Lotus Dean—making the celebrated entertainer a great-grandmother for the second time.

Opening the show with excitement, Goldberg told viewers, “I’m going to start out today because I have some fun news from over the weekend. My family welcomed Lotus Dean to the world. She’s 6lbs., 3oz. That’s Lotus and Ruby [the dog]. She is, that’s her dad — my grandson, Mason,” as she presented photos of the newborn with the family’s dog and in the arms of her grandson Mason.

Mason is the youngest child of Goldberg’s daughter, Alexandrea “Alex” Martin. Goldberg welcomed Alex on May 9, 1973, with her first husband, Alvin Martin. Alex later married Bernard Dean—her husband three times over—who has kept a notably private life. Reflecting on their relationship in an earlier interview with MadameNoire, Alex said, “It’s about love, it’s about growing up, it’s about coming full circle. It’s about destiny and fate and being where you’re supposed to be.”

This marks Goldberg’s second time entering great-grandmotherhood. Her first great-grandchild, Charli Rose Burr-Reynaud, was born on March 15, 2014, to Alex’s eldest daughter, Amara. During a 2014 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Goldberg humorously noted, “I wasn’t your normal grandmother, and I’m not going to be your normal great-grandmother.”

Alex and her husband Bernard share three children—Amara, Jerzey, and Mason—who have been at the heart of Goldberg’s publicly cherished family bond. When introducing Alex as a guest on The View, Goldberg expressed deep affection, saying, “I’m proud to call her my best friend. She is one of the most trustworthy and loyal people I know.” She added, “She is somebody who makes me laugh, like ‘bwuaha’ laugh. We can talk to each other any time during the day or night. I just like her a lot.”

In a May 2024 interview with People, Goldberg reflected on the wisdom she has gained from her daughter, sharing that Alex taught her to “pick my battles.” Goldberg explained, “Pick your battles and then fight those. You don’t have to fight every battle, because you can’t win every one. But the ones that you think have merit, pick those. That’s what I learned from my baby girl.”

On The View, co-hosts reacted warmly to the photos of Mason with his newborn daughter. When Sunny Hostin commented that he “looks in love,” Goldberg jokingly replied, “Yeah, that’ll change.” She followed with, “It’s a wonderful thing. It’s a wonderful thing. This is my second.”

While Ana Navarro congratulated Alex for becoming a grandmother again, Goldberg lightheartedly shifted the spotlight back to herself, saying she “[doesn’t] think about that, I simply think about myself. Cause I never thought I’d have two great-grandkids. To be there for that.”

Hostin later asked what Goldberg’s great-grandchildren call her, wondering whether she goes by “Glam-ma.” Goldberg clarified with a laugh: “No, they call me Whoopi — cause I’m not the grandma! I’m the great grandma! So just Whoopi.”
