Karachi EV Bus fare increased – Check latest fare for February 2025

18 February, 2025 14:03

The Sindh government has increased fares for electric buses after previously approving a fare hike of up to 60% for the People’s Bus Service (PBS) Red Line in Karachi.

This decision affects thousands of daily commuters who depend on these services for affordable transportation.

Revised Fares for PBS Red Line and EV Buses

The fare hike, which varies between 20% and 60% across different routes, was implemented on February 1, 2025. The new fare structure is now displayed on all buses.

Following the increase:

The minimum fare for electric buses has risen to 80 rupees from the previous 50 rupees.

The maximum fare is now 120 rupees, compared to the earlier 100 rupees.

Red Line and other EV bus routes have also experienced similar fare adjustments.

Reasons Behind the Fare Hike

The National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC), which manages PBS operations, requested the fare revision due to rising operational costs. The expansion of routes has led to increased expenses for maintenance, fuel, and infrastructure, necessitating a fare increase.

Impact on Commuters

The fare hike has placed an additional financial burden on students, office workers, and other daily commuters. However, despite the increase, there has been no significant decline in passenger numbers, as public transport remains a more affordable option compared to private vehicles.

Future Developments

The fare adjustment has sparked concerns among commuters about potential future increases in public transport costs. Authorities have assured the public that they are working on solutions to maintain affordability while ensuring efficient service.
