Sugar prices drop in Karachi after govt crackdown

25 March, 2025 15:55

The price of sugar in Karachi has gone down by Rs. 9 per kilogram following a government crackdown on hoarders.

According to Abdul Rauf Ibrahim, Chairman of the Karachi Wholesalers Grocers Association, the wholesale price of sugar in Jodia Bazaar has dropped from Rs168 to Rs159 per kg.

The ex-mill rate (price from sugar mills) has also fallen to Rs156 per kg. In local retail markets, sugar is currently being sold for Rs175 to Rs180 per kg.

He added that the country has a sufficient supply of sugar, and the government’s action to fix prices has helped reduce speculation and control artificial price hikes.

On the other hand, Federal Minister for Food Security, Rana Tanveer Hussain, rejected claims of increasing sugar prices. He clarified that the current market price is Rs164 per kg, while utility stores are selling it at Rs153 per kg.

To keep things in check, the minister shared that a special committee led by Ishaq Dar has been set up to monitor sugar prices and ensure stability in the market.

Thanks to these measures, sugar prices are finally seeing a downward trend, bringing some relief to consumers.
