FBR monitors 60,000 jewelers, finds only 10,524 filed returns
The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has launched strict action to bring more people from the gold business into the tax system.
According to reports, FBR has data of more than 60,000 jewelers across Pakistan, but only 21,000 are registered with the department. Out of these, just 10,524 jewelers filed their tax returns. Officials say many jewelers underreport their income to avoid taxes, which is against the law.
Sources shared that FBR has already prepared a list of around 900 jewelers in Punjab, mainly from Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, and Multan. Notices are being sent to those who are not registered or are paying less tax than required. They will be asked to explain their position.
An FBR spokesperson said the department is working step by step to bring all sectors into the tax net. He added that no injustice will be done, but every citizen must pay their fair share. According to FBR, if taxes are paid honestly, Pakistan’s economy can become stronger.
