03 October, 2025 18:50

Tomato prices in Pakistan have jumped sharply, creating more pressure on household budgets. In Islamabad, tomatoes are being sold at Rs380 per kilogram, while other cities are also seeing very high rates: Rs360 in Rawalpindi, Rs350 in Faisalabad, Rs340 in Lahore, and Rs320 in Gujranwala and Sialkot.

This sudden rise is mainly due to recent floods that damaged crops and disrupted the supply chain.

According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), overall weekly inflation went up by 0.56% for the week ending October 2, 2025.

The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), which tracks the prices of 51 essential items in 17 cities, now stands at 332.17 points, compared to 330.32 last week. On a yearly basis, inflation is up 4.07%.

For low-income families earning up to Rs17,732 per month, inflation hit harder, rising by 0.82%. Other income groups also faced increases between 0.49% and 0.76%.

Out of 51 items, the prices of 19 went up, 12 dropped, while 20 remained stable. Tomatoes saw the biggest jump, with prices rising by 46.44% in a single week.

Other items that became costlier included petrol, diesel, garlic, onions, and mutton. On the other hand, the prices of chicken, bananas, pulses, and LPG came down slightly.
