Karachi Milk Price May Reach Rs.400 Per Litre? Dairy Farmers Warn Government Ahead of October 11 Deadline

07 October, 2025 14:07

The Dairy Farmers Association has warned that milk prices in Karachi could reach Rs.400 per litre by 2026 if the government fails to act before October 11. Farmers have demanded the government to officially revise the milk rates in the city before the deadline.

Rising Production Costs

According to Ghulam Shabbir Dar, spokesperson for the Dairy Farmers Association, the production cost of milk has increased sharply in recent months. He said that fodder, which earlier cost Rs.500 to Rs.600 per maund, is now being sold at Rs.1,200 per maund. He added that farmers are struggling to manage the expenses of animal feed, medicines, and maintenance.

Farmers Demand Rs.250 Per Litre

Dar explained that farmers are left with no choice but to demand Rs.250 per litre for milk. “If our demand is ignored, we will start protests after October 11 and also move to court,” he said during an interview on ARY News show Ba Khabar Sawera.

Representation in Price Committee

The spokesperson emphasized that the dairy farmers deserve representation in the price control committee, as they are the producers. “This is our product, and we have the right to be part of the decision-making,” he said.

Future Warning for 2026

Dar also warned that if the government continues to ignore their demands, milk could cost Rs.400 per litre in 2026. He urged the authorities to immediately accept the farmers’ proposals to avoid a severe dairy crisis.

Unsuccessful Government Meeting

Earlier, a meeting held at Commissioner House Karachi regarding milk prices ended without any result. Representatives from dairy farmers, wholesalers, and retailers demanded that the government issue a new price notification immediately.

Impact of Floods on Dairy Sector

The Dairy Farmers Association revealed that the recent floods have badly damaged the dairy sector, causing around 30% increase in production costs.
Farmers claimed they are currently facing losses of nearly Rs.3 billion per day, making it impossible to sell milk at old prices.
