Pakistan reduces EV charging electricity cost by Rs53 per unit
The government of Pakistan has announced a subsidy of Rs53 per unit for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, reducing the cost of electricity from Rs92 to Rs39 per unit. This means EV charging will now be much cheaper for users across the country.
During a meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Finance, Secretary of Industries and Production Saif Anjum shared that the new EV Policy 2026–30 has been approved by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The new policy aims to save $1 billion in oil imports by 2030 and is supported by a $1.8 million grant from the International Finance Corporation (IFC). The secretary added that reduced fuel use will also help the country save an additional $450 million in health costs by cutting down pollution-related diseases.
At present, Pakistan has over 76,000 electric vehicles on the road, and several global car companies are planning to set up local production plants.
To encourage EV adoption, the government has also announced a Rs80,000 subsidy on electric motorcycles priced at around Rs250,000, along with the reduction in electricity rates for charging stations.
By 2030, Pakistan aims to install 3,000 EV charging stations nationwide and ensure that 30% of all new vehicles sold are electric.
