Duration unveiled for printing new currency notes in Pakistan – check details

12 January, 2026 15:53

The Pakistan Security Printing Corporation (PSPC) has said that printing new currency notes with updated designs usually takes two months.

In an official statement, PSPC shared that the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has already sent the proposed designs of the new banknotes to the federal cabinet for final approval. However, the cabinet has not yet approved the designs. Once approval is given, the printing process will start and is expected to be completed within two months.

For example, if the new designs are approved in January 2026, the printing of the notes will be completed by the end of March 2026.

The Pakistan Security Printing Corporation (PSPC) supports the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) in managing the country’s currency. PSPC is responsible for printing, packaging, and delivering banknotes and prize bonds according to the required standards and schedules set by SBP-BSC.

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) usually introduces a new series of banknotes every fifteen to twenty years to protect the security and integrity of the currency. Following this practice, the central bank started the process for new currency notes in January 2024 by inviting the public to submit designs.

Later, in July 2025, SBP Governor Jameel Ahmed confirmed that the designs had been finalised, but he did not share them publicly. The final designs have now been submitted to the federal government for cabinet approval.

Issuing a new banknote series is a long process that involves several stages and careful coordination between different institutions. According to the central bank, it normally takes two to three years to launch a new series. However, in a statement issued in January 2024, the SBP said it aimed “to complete the process within the next 2 years”.

Based on this timeline, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is expected to unveil the new currency notes in 2026.
