Over Rs540 Million Worth of Kites Sold Ahead of Basant as Lahore Celebrates Festival’s Return
Lahore has witnessed massive public enthusiasm ahead of Basant, with more than Rs540 million worth of kites and kite string sold over just three days, according to the Kite Association. The historic festival is making a grand comeback after 25 years, filling the city with colour, music, and excitement.
Strong Sales as Basant Fever Grips Lahore
The Kite Association revealed that over 500,000 kites were sold in a single day on Tuesday, as buying activity continued for the third consecutive day across Lahore’s major markets. Designated kite markets remained overcrowded as residents rushed to prepare for the long-awaited celebration.
Basant is scheduled to be celebrated from February 6 to February 8, following the lifting of a long-standing ban under strict safety regulations approved by the Punjab government.
Mochi Gate Market Buzzes With Festive Energy
Mochi Gate emerged as one of the busiest hubs, with a large number of buyers purchasing kites and strings of various sizes and designs. The festive mood was further elevated by a Basant-themed float arranged by the district administration, where the rhythmic beats of dhol added to the lively atmosphere.
However, some citizens expressed concern over high prices, urging the government to intervene and make kite-flying material more affordable for the public.
Government Assures Safety and Strict SOPs
Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb visited Mochi Gate to review Basant shopping arrangements. Speaking to the media, she said that all preparations for a safe Basant have been completed and urged citizens to strictly follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) during celebrations.
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced a special Basant celebration at Liberty Chowk on February 7, where a giant decorative kite has already been installed as a symbol of the festival’s return.
Public Holiday Announced Across Punjab
The Punjab government has declared February 6 and 7 as public holidays across the province, according to an official notification, allowing citizens to fully participate in the celebrations.
The Punjab cabinet has also permitted the manufacturing of kite-flying material not only in Lahore but in four other districts, while assuring foolproof security arrangements to prevent any untoward incidents.
Weather Expected to Favor Kite Flying
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Lahore’s weather during Basant will remain cold and dry on February 6 and 7, with partly cloudy conditions on February 8. Winds are expected to blow at 10 to 15 km/h, making conditions suitable for kite flying.
The Met Office has advised kite flyers to avoid flying near electricity wires to ensure safety.
